Fatima Yasmin, Secretary, Department of Economic Relations (ERD), Ministry of Finance, has been appointed as the new Finance Secretary. Planning Commission member Sharifa Khan has been appointed as the new ERD secretary. Both joined the government service in 1991.

The Ministry of Public Administration on Thursday issued a notification appointing the two secretaries. The order will be effective on July 11.

Fatima Yasmin is becoming the first woman finance secretary of the country. She is also the first woman ERD secretary of the country. Fatima Yasmin, an employee of the BCS ninth batch administration cadre, was vice chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) before becoming ERD secretary.

Sharifa Khan is also an employee of the ninth batch of BCS. He was Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce before becoming a member of the Planning Commission. Earlier, he was the Commercial Counselor of the Bangladesh High Commission in the United Kingdom. She will be the second female ERD secretary.

Incumbent Finance Secretary Abdur Rauf Talukder has recently been appointed by the government as the Governor of Bangladesh Bank. Incumbent Governor Fazle Kabir’s term ends on July 3. Abdur Rauf Talukder is scheduled to join as governor on or after July 4. The rest of the posts are being reshuffled mainly because Abdur Rauf Talukdar is the governor.
