Oppo R9s vs. OnePlus 3 – The Chinese War

Oppo and One Plus are the leading Chinese smartphone manufacturers in India. Interestingly, OnePlus company was formed by the former Oppo Vice President. OnePlus sells its devices only on online platforms whereas Oppo devices are available both on online platforms and in offline market. Here, we will compare two smartphones from these two brands- Oppo R9s and OnePlus 3 and find out which one is worth the buy.

Design and Display:

Oppo R9s has an all metallic body with the dimensions of 153.00 x 74.30 x 6.58 mm and is one of the thinnest phones (just 6.58 mm thickness), which is less than that of OnePlus 3. It is also very light and weighs 145 grams. Oppo R9s comes in two colours- gold and black.

Oppo R9s is equipped with a 5.5-inch display which comes with IPS LCD Full High-Definition screen. It has a resolution of 1,080 x 1,920 pixels and a pixel density of 401 PPI.  It is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass v5, Scratch-resistant glass.

OnePlus 3 is a gorgeous device which is made of space-grade aluminium and has the dimensions of 152.70 x 74.70 x 7.35. It is heavier than Oppo R9s and weighs 158 grams. OnePlus 3 is available in two colours: graphite and soft gold.

OnePlus 3 is also equipped with a 5.5-inch display which has optic AMOLED display. It has the same screen resolution of 1,080 x 1,920 pixels and a pixel density of 401 PPI. Both the devices have a great display, and sunlight legibility is just superb.

Both the devices lack a physical home key button rather it is a capacitive key, which recognizes a tap. This key also acts as a fingerprint sensor and is very fast for both the devices. The home key is flanked by capacitive keys on both sides, which are backlit. In OnePlus 3, the keys are well lit while in Oppo R9s the keys are dimly backlit. There is no branding on the front side for both the phones. In Oppo R9s, at the top lies the 16 MP front camera whereas OnePlus has 8MP camera on the front side. In both the devices, volume keys lie on the left side and power key and SIM tray on the right. There is an additional feature of Alert sider in OnePlus 3 which lies as above the volume key. Also, the SIM slot in Oppo R9s is a hybrid SIM slot. Again, for both the devices 3.5 mm headphone jack is located at the bottom of the device and back cover is non-user replaceable.

Performance:

Performance wise OnePlus 3 clearly beats Oppo R9s with massive 6 RAM. Oppo R9s runs on lesser 4 GB RAM.  OnePlus 3 also uses 2.2 Ghz Quad core processor whereas Oppo R9s has 2 GHz Octo Core processor. Oppo R9s uses 8 low-performance cores, which is really low as compared to four high-performance cores in OnePlus 3. OnePlus 3 uses fast Snapdragon 820 processor while Oppo R9s has Snapdragon 625 processor. Even for the graphics OnePlus 3 uses faster Adreno 530 processor.

Software:

Oppo R9s runs on Marshmallow (6.0.1) with its own ColorOS 3.0 on the top. OnePlus 3 also runs on same Android Marshmallow (6.0.1) with its own new OS Oxygen 3.1.2. Oppo R9s lacks the app drawer, which is present in OnePlus 3. Both the devices support gesture control.

Camera and Storage:

Both Oppo R9s and OnePlus 3 feature a 16MP rear camera and Sony IMX sensor. OnePlus 3 has an aperture of 2.0 F whereas Oppo R9s has an aperture of 1.7 F. OnePlus 3 has an additional facility of Optical Image stabilization. For selfies, it is the Oppo R9s, which has larger 16 MP front camera with 2.0F aperture. OnePlus 3 has 8 MP front camera. There is no front LED flash in either of the devices.

Both the devices have a huge internal storage of 64 GB, but it is expandable only in Oppo R9s.

Battery and Connectivity:

Oppo R9s has a battery capacity of 3010 mAH whereas OnePlus 3 has a battery capacity of 3000mAH. They have non-removable batteries but support fast charging.

Oppo R9s is a dual SIM device but with a hybrid slot which means you can only use one SIM and memory card or two SIMs and no memory card. OnePlus 3 is also a dual SIM device but with a normal SIM SLOT as it lacks expandable memory. OnePlus 3 also supports 4G in both the SIM slots, unlike Oppo R9s where only one SIM supports 4G (VOLTE). Also, OnePlus 3 uses USB TYPE C and doesn’t support microUSB.

The Verdict:

One Plus 3 is a clear winner with the best display and best processor. It gives an incredible performance. The only drawback it has is the lack of expandable memory. The Oppo R9s price in India is expected to be Rs27,690 whereas OnePlus 3 costs Rs27,999.
