Rodrigo was elected President of the Philippines in 2016 with a commitment to crack down on crime as well as crack down on drugs.

After coming to power, when he started the ‘war on drugs’, Rodrigo faced a lot of criticism at home and abroad.

Rodrigo’s government has been accused of extrajudicially killing thousands of suspects. The International Criminal Court (ICC) is investigating the killings.

Under the Philippine constitution, the president can only serve one term. So Rodrigo did not have a chance to run for president in the second round.
