Repairing A Bearing

Dryer bearing repairs can be a costly proposition. These components sit around the drum and must remain in good condition in order to rotate cleanly. To determine if your dryer has a broken bearing, speak to an appliance repair company. A replacement bearing will usually cost $75 to $150.

Most dryer bearings are pre-installed into the drum, but some can be replaced as stand-alone components. The replacement part comes with self-tapping screws that thread onto the non-threaded metal plate. You will need a brake removal tool to remove the original bearing. Once you’ve removed the bearing, you can install a new one. It will likely be located near the opening of the door, so make sure to get the correct bearing for your model.

Replacing A Door Switch

If your dryer won’t start after a few attempts, replacing the door switch might be the solution. This small appliance provides critical information to the dryer’s control panel, telling it whether the door is open or closed. Replacing a door switch can easily fix the problem and get your dryer up and running again. To do this, gather the tools you need: screwdrivers, putty knife, replacement door switch, and a hose clamp.

To replace a door switch, first take the door off the machine and open it. The door switch is typically attached to a wiring harness. The door switch and the wiring harness are often attached with clips. Use a screwdriver to pry these clips apart. Then, carefully remove the door switch from the dryer, making sure that you do not break it or damage the switch. If you see a broken plastic or switch that has a stuck position, you’ll need to replace the door switch.

Replacing A Thermostat

If your dryer is having problems, you may need to replace the thermostat. This small component is located inside the dryer and is usually round or oval in shape. You can identify this component by its label, which may include letters or numbers. A damaged thermostat will need to be replaced, but a functioning one can be tested first. Replace it if you notice the dryer is taking longer than usual to dry clothes, or the temperature is fluctuating frequently.

To test the thermostat, turn off the power to your dryer and remove the back panel. You will need a VOM to perform the test. You can also clip a VOM Probe onto one of the terminals on the thermostat. Make sure you clip one to the button and one to the terminal. If the thermometer’s needle reads zero, the unit is working. If it reads a high needle, the switch is faulty.

Replacing A Timer

Replacing a timer on the dryer is easier than you might think. The first step is to locate the timer. Look for a labelled wire. If it’s missing, take a digital picture of the wires to reference later. Then, remove the timer and the mounting screws. Then, unscrew the timer knob from the control panel and remove it.

Now, locate the timer motor control. You’ll likely find two wires, one for power and one for ground. Be sure to remove the power lead, which is typically larger than the other two. Unplug the wire harnesses and use a multimeter to check for continuity. You may need an alligator clip probe adapter for this task. Once you’ve disconnected the wires, replace the timer.

Testing The Overload Protector

To test the overload protection of a dryer, locate the power cord to the appliance and plug it into an electrical outlet. Next, open the door of the appliance, and remove the top panel. Look for the overload switch. Most appliances have this switch located behind the bottom toe or back panel. Some panels are held in place by small metal clips. If necessary, use a flathead screwdriver or putty knife to loosen them. You should then notice two wires. Pull these wires gently to disconnect the switch.

Identify the start switch. This is the switch that sends power to the drive motor when you push the button. The switch is usually a push-button type. It does not usually fail, but you should check it to make sure that it is working properly. To test this switch, remove the panel and clip the probes to the terminals and button of the switch. If the switch is not working, replace it with a new one of the same type.
