Types of accommodations offered by the NDIS
The NDIS covers two types of accommodation plans. These include:
1. Short-Term Accommodation (also known as Respite Care)
The NDIS fully funds the Short-Term Accommodation under the Core Support category. It is the funding provided to participants to live away from home for a maximum of twenty-eight days per year. During this twenty-eight-day stay, the NDIS takes care of the participants’ and support providers’ expenses of travel, stay, food, and activities.
The amount of funding allocated to Respite Care is directly proportional to the amount of help the participant requires in their everyday activities. This means that the more care a participant needs, the greater the Short-Term Accommodation budget allotted to them. It is important to note that you cannot use the Short-Term Accommodation facility in times of a housing crisis as the NDIS does not fund permanent housing.
2. Medium-Term Accommodation
Medium-Term Accommodation is the funding provided to participants who have permanent housing but require a temporary settlement until their support needs for their own house have been completely met. Medium-Term Accommodation is offered to participants for a maximum of ninety days.
How to include Short Term Accommodation in your NDIS plan?
For Short-Term Accommodation to be included in your NDIS plan, you need to get your plan approved during the plan review meeting. Within the plan review meeting, participants are required to:
- Clearly state the amount of support they will be needing
- Inform the NDIS if their carer is willing to provide them the required amount of support during the entire duration of the break
- How do they think they will benefit from the NDIS Respite Care facility
- If the stay will be personally and socially enriching for them
The NDIS approves Short-Term Accommodation if it helps participants fulfil any of the goals mentioned in their NDIS plan. For example, being able to live their life independently, learn new skills, or interact with new people. Any documents supporting the participant’s claims (for example, a report from a therapist, psychologist, or care provider stating why the break is essential for the participant) can increase the chances of their Short-Term Accommodation being approved.

How to include Medium-Term Accommodation in your NDIS plan?
The Medium-Term Accommodation is included in your NDIS plan as part of ‘Home and Living Support’ needs. The NDIS determines if you are eligible for the provision of Middle-Term Accommodation by assessing three documents. These include:
- Assessments of support and accommodation needs
- Allied Health professional reports
- Daily support needs report
Once all the documents have been assessed, the NDIS makes its decision, within ten days, based on whether the support will help participants:
- Pursue their goals
- Encourage self-management within the individual
- Reduce person-to-person support
- Strengthen community, education, and health-care relationships
Suppose you are provided with Medium-Term Accommodation by the NDIS. Only the accommodation costs will be covered in that case, but you do not need to worry about additional expenses as NDIS has the solution for you!
You can use other category fundings within your NDIS plan to pay for supports when staying within Medium-Term Accommodation. You need to note that you cannot use Medium-Term Accommodation funding to pay your permanent residency mortgage or rent. If your Medium-Term Accommodation does not get approved on the first attempt, the NDIS can help you provide other home and living supports. You also have the chance to request an internal review of NDIS’s decision within three months.
