Police have arrested a union parishad’s secretary and his associate for stealing relief materials allocated for flood affected people at Mendipur union under Khaliajuri upazila in Netrokona.

The arrestees were identified as Mendipur UP Secretary Musa Miah (40) and his associate Nasim Ahmed, reports our Mymensingh correspondent quoting Md Mojibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Khaliajuri Police Station.

The OC said the arrests were made following the recovery of relief materials from them.

Citing locals, the OC said UP chairman Md Abu Hakim went to his home leaving the relief items under the supervision of Mendipur UP secretary Musa and his associate on Monday night (June 20, 2022).

“Today, when the UP chairman went to distribute the relief items, he realised that the relief items are short. He, later, informed the matter to Upazila Nirbahi Officer AHM Ariful Haque. The UNO sent police to the spot,” the OC said.

Later, police conducted a drive at Nasim’s studio at Boalia Bazar and recovered 16 packets of relief materials and arrested the duo.

Meanwhile, flood-affected people of the union held a protest rally demanding the punishment of the UP secretary and his associate.

UNO Ariful said police are questioning them.

Legal steps will be taken against them after investigation, he added.
